No Smoking Day
SMOKERS URGED TO KICK THE HABIT IN 2009
Smokers are being urged to kick off the New Year in style by stubbing out their
cigarettes.
Stockport Primary Care Trust (PCT) has teamed up with Stockport County Football
Club - Community Foundation to fire home the message that smoking kills.
One Stockport resident dies every day from a smoking- related illness. Nearly
all of these people will have started smoking in their teens.

Smoking is the single largest cause of premature death in the North West. More
than 6,500 people die each year from cancer. Lung cancer causes 9% of all
deaths, second only to heart attacks.
Nationally, lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK. A
new person is diagnosed with lung cancer every fifteen minutes, that's more than
38,000 people each year.

Rachael Turner from Stockport's Stop Smoking Service, said: "The New Year is
always a popular time for smokers to give up. And there is plenty support
available here in Stockport. By getting in touch with your local NHS Stop
Smoking Service you can get help to quit on your terms."
Mike Smith from the Stockport County Community Foundation, added: "Stockport
County is throwing its weight behind the PCT's attempt to get as many people as
possible to kick the habit. And the New Year is a great starting point in the
fight to give up."
Stockport County FC players will warmed-up in 'No Smoking Day' t-shirts when
Hartlepool United FC visited Edgeley Park, each player autographed them and
donated them to lucky supporters in the crowd. Also at half time County Mascots,
Animo & Fide also took part in a Penalty Shoot Out with Big Cig in Goal!
Smokers are four times more likely to quit using an NHS Stop Smoking Service. To
